Just a Brown Hand

On August 25th, Slack unveiled a new way for developers to connect to Slack, the “Add to Slack” button. Today, though, I want to talk about a seemingly small detail that has been more important to me than I would have expected.

The button features a hand—my hand, or at least a hand that looks like mine. Brown.

It wasn’t a political statement when I designed it. It was just… accurate. I was the designer. The hand I know best is my own. But the response made me realize how rarely people see themselves reflected in the small details of the products they use every day.
