On Being a Designer and a Developer
The 'unicorn' myth is dangerous. You don't need to be an expert in everything, but bridging the gap between design and code is a superpower.
The “unicorn” myth is dangerous. It suggests you need to be world-class at everything to be valuable. That’s not true.
But bridging the gap between design and code? That’s genuinely useful.
You don’t need to be a senior engineer. You need to understand how your designs will be implemented. You need to know what’s expensive and what’s cheap. You need to speak the language well enough to collaborate effectively.
The superpower isn’t being the best at both. It’s being fluent enough in both to make better decisions.
